<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Abies Balsamea~ Balsam Fir - A More Familiar Fir</image:title>
<image:caption>Until quite recently, my knowledge on trees and their medicinal potential was obsolete. Balsam fir was a name I had heard of here and there, but I did not have any further background. Though very similar, there are some slight but noticeable differences between Balsam and Fraser Fir. Other than specific characteristics, the geographical locations are a clear differentiator. Bark appears thin and ash gray toned. The Stomata is found in two silvery bands on the lower surface of the needles. Like Fraser and many other evergreens, it is wind pollinated. Click on the photo to learn more about identifications and naming origins. Be sure to come back due to that pure curiosity! Stomata = Microscopic pores found in on the underside of the soft, flat needles. For other pine trees it might be found in the grooves on the needle surface. These are crucial for photosynthesis! <image:caption>Balsam and other Fir are unfortunately not high on the edibility scale. According to Plant for Future the inner bark could potentially be cooked and then dried to powder for a thickener. You could add this to soups or mix with grains when bread-making. The oleo-resin from the pitch could potentially flavor your sweets or baked goods. A more flexible method might be including a pine flavored salt or sugar in recipes. These statements are for a close relative and likely fine to duplicate, however use caution and research before trying. (5) In essence, it is very aromatic and can be used to add a lovely fragrance to your home and much more. [EASY Wilderness Cleaner or Steam Satchel- COMING SOON]</image:caption>

<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Abies Fraseri ~ Fraser Fir - The Cadillac of Christmas Trees</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a name you have likely heard often, especially around the Holidays. Fraser Fir is THE tree to get, and it has been ranked the best Christmas tree in North Carolina for many years. Why? This tree has the awesome ability to shut it’s stomata when cut, which slows the drying process out. The needles are stubborn and hang on for dear life even as we rough em up to some LED’s. They hold on, stay sturdy, and are soft to the touch! That would be why Fraser Fir is considered THE best Christmas tree. (which if you know me, you know I tend to dislike biased statements.) <image:caption>MATCHA- As has a very particular growing process. Each plant is grown in the shade for several weeks before harvesting which increases chlorophyll production in order to generate the nutrients needed. Matcha is among the most nutrient of the green tea variations, packed full of antioxidants and amino acids. The precursor before being cut up and powdered can be referred to as tencha, which is rarely consumed as a loose leaf tea. TENCHA vs GYOKURO-> Gyokuro is often referred to as “Japans most luxurious shaded green tea.” Harvested from the first 3 youngest sprouts and shade the longest to produce rich natural sweetness and deep umami flavors. Gyokuro is enjoyed as a loose leaf tea without the leaves being rolled. Stems are really only removed for tencha and may be repurposed into a “powder tea" blend called Konacha which combines leftover powders of gyokuro and sencha most often. This is an affordable tea that is offered at restaurants. Konacha is not to be confused with kukicha, which is made with only the stems and stalks. The deep familiar flavor is associated with rolling the leaves first, and then tightly curling them. With Tencha, the first 5 sprouts are used and dried flat before cutting up and providing an essential base to ceremonial matcha.</image:caption>

<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Thymus Vulgaris ~ Thyme - An Herb for winter winds</image:title>
<image:caption>Thyme has long carried the reputation of being a protector, especially for the lungs and the spaces we inhabit. History runs through temple smoke, battlefields, and the sickrooms of plague-stricken Europe. The same qualities that made it valuable for embalming and ritual also gave it a place in protective remedies. It was burned, steeped, and mixed into vinegar’s to ‘clear’ the air. Today we often think of thyme as a kitchen herb, but it’s story reminds us that it has been tied to many uses. Both aromatic and cleansing; thyme has remained a companion through the seasons by offering warmth and strength when our body feels most vulnerable.</image:caption>

<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Thymus Vulgaris ~ Thyme - Bridging Kitchen & Apothecary</image:title>
<image:caption>Thyme bridges the world of food and medicine with ease. In the apothecary it has long been prepared as teas, syrups, and steams for respiratory troubles. The essential oils offer antimicrobial and expectorant qualities that support clear breathing and resilience. In the kitchen, those same properties come through in flavor and preservation. A sprig of thyme simmered in broth or roasted alongside vegetables not only deepens taste but also carries a protective nature into daily meals. This overlap between nourishment and healing has kept thyme close at hand for centuries. As both remedy and seasoning, thyme can remind us that care for the body often begins at the table. It is an herb that clears with offering warmth and comfort. It can bring protection whether steeped in a teacup or tucked into a roasting pan. [Try this steam satchel Recipe]</image:caption>

Quietly it reminds you that repairs are possible. Where Basil radiates heat and certainty, Geranium hums a steady song of balance and containment. Astringent yet tender and gentle, this plant is more about holding than pushing. You’ll find Geranium is not much for the spotlight and prefers a bit of coverage. Maybe it is pressed between journal pages, steeped in wound washes, or stirred into creams and salves. The strength lies in it’s subtle beauty. <image:title>That Brainy Blog - Ocimum Basilicum ~ Basil - Who has bright eyes & a warm Heart?</image:title>
<image:caption>Basil is the bright and warm hearted companion who walks into the room carrying sunshine in their pockets. Aromatic, assertive, and not afraid of heat. This is a plant that knows who it is. Where Blackberry (read about here) might sneak in and whisper protection, Basil declares clarity, and direction from the moment it touches your skin and tongue. Basil lives on the windowsill and at the altar; even found in the hands of the dead or on graves. It’s equally at home in tasty kitchen stews and soothing self-care baths. Across cultures it is a guardian and grief supporter. It is stimulating to not only appetite but also the spirit. There’s something both comforting and commanding about it being sweet in scent yet spicy in action. Where some herbs ground you downward, Basil lifts. It sharpens the mind but softens the heart. It could help pull someone out of mild dissociation and remind them: You’re here. You’re wanted. You’re alive.</image:caption>

<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Who is this bramble?</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s always a little wild where blackberry grows. You’ll find it climbing fences, reclaiming roadside ditches, threading through hedgerows, and around the edges and borders. Think fierce boundary keeper that appears cloaked in thorns and crowned with a bitter sweetness. It teaches us that not all nourishment comes easily and it isn’t always neat and clean. Once called “bramble-kiss” in old folklore, it was planted at thresholds to guard homes. Early spring is the best time to forage the leaves before they start sending the energy to the berries. It is actually beneficial to pick off some young leaves to encourage growth! You will notice the divided leaf clusters of 3 to 5 with serrated and ovate leaflets. In the late spring is when they will start producing the 5 petal white flowers that bear our seedy and slightly hairy fruits. They are considered aggregate fruits. They are small single seeded druplets that form outside of a core. For raspberries they form around a rasp, the fruit will slip off and leave it behind vs. breaking off and staying with the fruit like for our Blackberry. Blackberry is not to be confused with Black Raspberry (Rubus Occidentalis) a close relative. Blackberry’s value isn’t just found in the delicious fruit. It’s in it’s thorny boundaries. What it teaches us about when to close, when to firm, and when to draw back, a lesson I personally have really needed recently.</image:caption>

<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Oregano | Origanum Vulgare - Who is this “Joy of the Mountains?”</image:title>
<image:caption>Oregano is the sharp-tongued prince who clears mucus, microbes, and mental fog with pungent heat. He doesn’t soothe and cool: he purges, leaving only clarity behind. Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is often partnered with pizza and Mediterranean cuisine today, making it easier to forget about the ancient roots. Long before it became a kitchen staple, oregano was esteemed for far more than flavor. It was a medicinal herb with a rich legacy. Cultivated in the sunny and rocky cliffs of the Mediterranean, the name roughly means “joy of the mountain.” This reflects both the wild origins and uplifting aroma. The American Herbal Product Association (AHPA) highlights that ancient cultures prized oregano for therapeutic uses. Greek physicians like Hippocrates turned to oregano to soothe digestive issues and respiratory ailments, while Romans employed it as an antiseptic and remedy for muscle pain and infection. For centuries, folk medicine across Europe embraced it for coughs, cramps, and general wellness—even using it in wedding ceremonies and grave markers to symbolize joy and peace. (I like to create a little story line to help me remember the background, like Matthew Wood does!)</image:caption>

<image:title>That Brainy Blog - Little dragon, Big flavor | Why tarragon deserves a spot in your kitchen - ~ Tarragon's story weaves through the fabric of many cultures, from the ritualistic practices of the Aztecs to the healing gardens of European monasteries. Aztec Tradition: Mexican tarragon (Tagetes lucida), a close botanical cousin, was revered by the Aztecs not only as a culinary delight but as a sacred plant. It was burned as incense in ceremonies. It also had medicinal uses for treating hiccups and digestive ailments (Florida Heritage Foods). Greek and Roman Influence: While not central in classical Mediterranean herbology, tarragon belongs to the Artemisia genus, which includes many plants used medicinally in Greco-Roman tradition. Greek physicians such as Dioscorides wrote of wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as a remedy for digestive distress and as a symbolic purifier—a theme consistent with Christian metaphors of cleansing and renewal. Mongol and Middle Eastern Spread: Tarragon's journey into Europe was catalyzed by Mongol and Persian traders. Historical records suggest Mongolian horsemen chewed on tarragon to stimulate appetite and relieve fatigue—a traditional practice now being revisited through ethnobotanical study (The Botanist in the Kitchen, 2013). Christian Monastic Use: By the medieval period, tarragon had found its place in Christian monastic herb gardens. Although references are sparse, monastics valued it as a warming herb to "revive the spirits" and as part of holistic healing regimens that echoed Biblical themes of anointing and restoration (American Herbal Products Association).</image:title>
