Some may wonder, what’s the point of making mocktails or even learning how to. Friends, this is a fabulous skill to have and share for various reasons. If you enjoy hosting events or having friends over, you can whip out these skills especially to include non-drinkers.
Another scene where the mocktails shine is in spring and summertime! As the sun brings beautiful warmth, our bodies need water to help us stay cool. Some kiddos are notorious for avoiding plain water, so this can be a fun way to keep them cool and hydrated!
Does medicine have to be a negative taste or experience? I say no! Mocktails can be a delicious way to drink your medicine, as long as you know how. In my workshop listed below, I touch on the benefits in bitters and minerals for example.
Mocktail Making
Safety and Tips
<General Information, Educational Purposes
>
Mixing mocktails is very easy, but making them medicinal calls for extra skillz & knowledge.
Simple benefits you can easily achieve from mocktails include: hydration, cooling, stress reduction, sleep support, and much more!
Mocktails are zero-proof drinks layered with complex flavors and prepared fashionably like a cocktail would be. Mastering the methods of mixing layered complexity can take some time, and adding medicinal value even longer…That is why I first introduce the ingredient method.
INGREDIENTS METHOD:
- Choose the ingredients you would like to play around with in your base mocktail recipe. Before mixing anything, taste them alone and journal your thoughts. After you have experienced the ingredient alone, you can start testing different pairings.
- SAFETY - Anything we put into or on our bodies has some sort of effect...Understanding how you respond to the ingredients alone will help evaluate safety in mixing. Take care to research and be a healthy skeptic in evaluating specific health claims. Keep things simple and safe by starting with familiar ingredients and layer from there.
INGREDIENTS
ZERO-proof RUM: Base recipe by Kevin Koss (linked). This is what makes up our sweet aromatic base.
Hops Water or Ollipop: Flavored hop water like grapefruit and blood orange adds a bright burst of carbonation. Purchased from Sprouted Branch (linked)
Simple Syrup: For my workshop I was playing with Darjeeling simple syrup for a smoky element, but you can truly make almost anything into a simple syrup.
Saline Solution (optional): A few drops of saline solution can really bring out complex flavors, in the workshop I chat about a few different salts to try and what each does different.
Vinegar Bitters (optional): Add a splash of bitters to add even more depth [Recipe Here - coming soon]
Garnish with fresh herbs or citrus.
Use what you have on hand but know that each ingredient will alter the overall flavor. For example my first batch of zero rum was made exactly like the original recipe and turned deep amber in color. In the next batch I decided to play around with more spices as mentioned in the recording, which resulted in a slightly more caramel color. Use the guides provided through the workshop you help in your experimenting!

Step by Step Instruction
(1) PREP: Measure out and prep all your ingredients (recommended to use a kitchen scale). Find instructions for ZERO rum on Kevin Koss Youtube or Website! I did not offer measurements because I encourage you to play and find your own ;)
(2) DECIDE: Choose your ingredients and create your saline solution, along with your simple syrup.
(3)MIX: Add some ice to a shaker if using, or pour 1.5 oz (shot) of our rum directly into a glass. Optionally chill the glass, and add a touch of simple syrup! If using, splash in some vinegar bitters and fill with hops water or cola.
(4) FINISH: Top with a few drops of your saline solution to enhance the flavors. If using fresh herbs, add them and any citrus peels or juice.
BIGGEST TIP > Taste before adding a new layer: Try the ZERO rum alone first, and then again once you add your simple syrup or saline solution! Start with a small glass to play around, maybe to for variations.
