Some may wonder, what's the point of making mocktails or creating fun drinks at home? Mixing a special drink can turn an ordinary afternoon into something worth celebrating; whether it's a birthday, a backyard gathering, or simply enjoying the flavors of the season.
Homemade drinks are also a wonderful way to include everyone around the table. Whether you're hosting friends, welcoming family, or making something special for the kids. A thoughtfully crafted beverage helps everyone feel part of the celebration. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with fresh fruit, herbs from the garden, and sparkling water while staying cool and hydrated.
One of my favorite parts is that creating drinks like this encourages curiosity. You begin to notice how different herbs, fruits, and flavors work together. Gain confidence experimenting with what's growing in your own garden or available at your local market. Even when a recipe is simply for fun, you might be surprised by how much you learn along the way.
If you're interested in taking that curiosity a step further, my Mocktails Workshop explores how herbs, bitters, minerals, and other ingredients can add both flavor and function to everyday beverages. This recipe is all about celebrating summer, but it's also a great starting point for discovering the art of thoughtful drink making.
Drink Making
Safety and Tips
<General Information, Educational Purposes
>
Great drinks don't typically happen by accident. Whether you're making a cocktail, a mocktail, or something in between; the best recipes are built by understanding how flavors work together. One of my favorite creators for inspiration is Kevin Kos. His approach to balancing drinks has taught me a great deal about technique. While my recipes often lean into herbs and seasonal ingredients, many of the same principles apply.
INGREDIENTS METHOD:
Before mixing anything together, taste each ingredient on its own. Is it sweet? Tart? Bitter? Floral? Cooling? Earthy? Write down a few notes if you're experimenting with a new recipe. Start combining just two ingredients at a time and quickly discover which flavors complement one another and which ones compete.
- SAFETY - One of the joys of drink making is experimenting, but it's wise to start with familiar ingredients before branching into less common herbs or botanicals.
This recipe is meant to be refreshing and fun, but the same curiosity you build here can become the foundation for creating more functional beverages in the future.
INGREDIENTS
Fresh citrus, herbs, and ripe fruit almost always create a brighter and more vibrant drink than bottled alternatives. Even a small sprig of mint or squeeze of lemon can completely change the final result.
1 Lemon (juice of)
Fresh Mint (I used 8-10 orange mint leaves)
3 oz Simple Syrup: I created a watermelon simple syrup the traditional way just to try it. This requires a lot of sugar, and I plan to play around with different sugars in the future!
For the simple syrup you will need 16 oz of fresh cubed watermelon and 8 oz of sugar.
2 oz White Rum or Vodka (I used Bacardi)
Top with Sparkling Mineral Water or Sparkling Water
Optional ice and garnish: I garnished with watermelon, a lemon slice, and one mint leaf.
Adjust according to personal preference! I like sweeter, so I used more simple syrup and less mineral water. Try a different melon for your simple syrup like honeydew! Check this recipe out → Lemon Lime Mocktail

Step by Step Instruction
(1) MUDDLE: Muddle fresh mint with Bacardi in your glass. (Optionally use a separate glass is you want to strain the mint leaves out but I keep them in)
(2) ADD: Add in your simple syrup and top with sparkling water. (Optionally add ice before or after simple syrup)
(3) GARNISH: Add your straw and mix vertically. Garnish if planning to with a triangular watermelon slice, lemon slice, and a mint leaf stuck to the lemon slice. TIP > Use a frozen lemon slice and cut a slit using a knife to easily slip on your rim.
BIGGEST TIP > Taste before adding a new layer: Start with a small glass to play around, maybe two for variations.
